Nobody knows exactly, but probably the first counterfeit dates back since the introduction of the coin in human society. Romans made a series of counterfeits, later on called "legal", by making coins of copper silvered. Roman soldiers fighting in enemy territories were paid with these coins. If they were to be taken prisoners, they did not want to lose gold or silver this way! (...) details... In countries where democracy and market economy are currently strengthening, countries that were led by dictatorial regimes or centralized economies, freedom has lead to a real explosion on the market of services and large consume goods. Taking into account that the legislation for the protection of intellectual property rights and trademarks in these countries appears and is strengthening with time, the state's control bodies do not always manage to fight efficiently against counterfeiting. Cosmetic products, medicines, textiles, food, cellular phones, music or software CDs, spare parts for motor vehicles, these represent a multitude of counterfeited products, thrown on the market, under renowned trademarks, for attractive prices. To what extent do you think the perfume sector was affected by counterfeiting in Romania? Did you have cases of counterfeiting of PRESTIGE PARFUM products?


Unfortunately in Romania there are many counterfeit perfumes, and for some of them the forgery can be seen by naked eye, and when I say that I refer to the doubtful quality of the exterior package, bottle, not to talk about the quality of the “aroma” inside the bottle… But there are also counterfeit products resembling very well with authentic ones. Only a connoisseur could tell apart such products and the original by subtle differences on the package. Precisely to protect our portfolio products we created the Prestige Parfum hologram – Original Product which is applied on the package of each of our products. This hologram certifies the authenticity of the product and its quality of international level.

What is the strategy of PRESTIGE PARFUM against counterfeiting? With whom do you work to this effect?


The Prestige Parfum portfolio includes prestigious brads such as Dior, Guerlain, Cartier, Davidoff, Jennifer Lopez, Chopard, Joop!, Jill Sander, Lancaster, Burberry, Christian Lacroix, Loewe; unfortunately, we discovered on the Romanian market counterfeit products to many of the brands we distribute exclusively. Internally we are cooperating with the national Authority for Consumer protection and REACT, a society of lawyers fighting against counterfeiting.

Which are the measures taken by manufacturers and importers of perfumes to protect the brands?


The most important action is consumer education – a brand product may be purchased only in a shop agreed by the respective company. In our field a genuine perfume can be bought from a selective, elegant perfumery presenting the entire range of the product, not just perfume water, but also the deodorant, the body cream, the shower gel, and the selling personnel is prepared to present, explain the product and offer the best advice. There are testers to try on the product, samples, advertising and promotion materials, various offers and gifts for the clients and, above all, the Prestige Parfum certifying the authenticity of the respective perfume.

What is your opinion on the establishment of a civil anticounterfeiting organization in Romania?


Such an organization was necessary to protect the consumer, the brand and also the representative of the brand on the Romanian market. Good luck in eliminating counterfeited products from the market!
